09/28 What Are You Practicing Every Day?
We often talk about healthy habits as things we're trying to accomplish. We want to exercise more, eat better, sleep longer, or become more consistent. But I've been thinking about another way to look at habits that might make them feel a little less overwhelming.
What if instead of thinking about them as things we need to accomplish, we thought about them as things we're practicing?
Every time you choose to take a walk instead of spending the entire evening sitting, you're practicing being someone who values movement. When you prepare a meal at home even though it's easier to order takeout, you're practicing taking care of yourself. When you choose to go to bed because you're tired rather than staying up simply because there's more you could accomplish, you're practicing listening to what your body needs.
The important thing about practice is that you don't have to do it perfectly.
Nobody expects to learn a new skill by getting it right every single time. We make mistakes, adjust, and try again. Healthy habits work much the same way.
You will miss workouts. You'll eat meals that don't make you feel particularly good. You'll stay up too late. You'll have weeks when your routine seems to disappear completely.
None of those things mean you've failed.
They're simply opportunities to practice returning to the habits that matter to you.
I think this perspective can take some of the pressure out of healthy living. Instead of asking whether you're doing everything correctly, you can ask whether you're continuing to practice the behaviors that support the life you want.
Over time, those practices become familiar. They require less thought. They become part of who you are rather than something you're constantly trying to force yourself to do.
As September comes to an end, think about what you've been practicing this month. Don't worry about whether you've perfected anything. Pay attention to the things you've returned to, even after you've gotten off track.
Those are the habits worth carrying into October.
Have a great week,
Adam
